For the last number of years, come September Bob Boardway would sit down with the summer soccer team he coached for one last gettogether meal before parting ways until the next year.
This year it wasn't the usual event he expected though.
Mentioning to his team late in the summer that it might be his last year coaching summer soccer, the team and those involved decided to do something to thank him for his time and effort with the Northern Nova Soccer Club over the years.
During their dinner, Boardway was presented the first annual "Bob Boardway Award" which will recognize the Coach of the Year at the annual NNU awards banquet. The award, created in Boardway's honour, is meant to represent the effort put into coaching by a Northern Nova soccer coach as Boardway has demonstrated for the past 35 years in Pictou County.
Boardway was also presented with a plaque by former player Jackie FittRyan with the following engraved on it:

When asked what was going through his head when given the award he said it was a flurry of memories.
"The memories of a lot of people that I was involved with either coaching them or with them over the years came back to me in a flash when they announced naming the award after me," he said. "I just remembered all the clinics I took part in, the people that taught me, the players I coached. It's hard to put into words everything that I was thinking in that moment."
Boardway said it was just a regular day for him the whole way along and he expected the dinner to be nothing different from past ones.
"I had no idea that it was going to happen at all," said Boardway. "I told them at provincials it might be my last season, but never expected they would help do something like this for me. I was rushing to get there from the high school just like a normal day to the annual dinner. It was truly special."
The honour comes after tens of thousands of hours put into coaching over the years. He began coaching baseball and hockey 35 years ago, picking up soccer after graduating from St. FX with an education degree and becoming a teacher.
"I just picked up soccer when I got into teaching because I wanted to continue coaching, but all the other teams already had coaches," he said. "It just slowly grew on me and years later I have a love for it that I may not have had if I didn't start coaching when I started teaching."
Not only has Boardway been coaching in the community such a long time, but he also helped start the Stellarton Soccer Association (now Northern Nova) in 1986, with the first summer season being in 1987.
"The school season just wasn't long enough to get the technique and tactics of the game taught to the kids so we were looking for something to make the season longer," he said. "A few of us got together and helped form the association that has grown outside of Stellarton to the region that we have today."
Although he will stay involved in school soccer moving forward, he said that with three kids in different areas of the world that he wants to make sure both he and his wife have the time to travel and spend time with them.
"I will definitely miss it and it's been a great honour coaching summer soccer for so long, but the big payback for me has been seeing people like Jackie becoming a mother, raising her kids and coaching now," he said. "Now she's giving back to the group she came from. The big thing for me, and I think she'll be great at as well, is that although you're coaching a sport, you're trying to develop good people and hope they pass it on in the future."
